The tree is much stronger when it is grafted onto a variety that grows from a seedling," says Sequeira. Today, over one-third of the project's 150 grafted plants consist of 15 varieties of mangoes, but they’ve experimented with other fruits as well and ones that aren’t commonly found in Goa, such as rambutans (Nephelium lappaceum), guava, passionfruit and pomelo (Citrus maxima).
